SESSIONS AND SPEAKERS
Session 1: 9:00-10:15 a.m.
101: Mother-Infant Sleep Location and Nighttime Feeding Behavior (1 CERP)
The controversy around mother–infant bedsharing continues to grow, and mothers are frequently told to never bedshare. Is this approach effective in keeping infants safe? In order to make sound policy recommendations, policy makers need current data on where infants sleep and how families handle nighttime feedings. This presentation will review data from recent studies on sleep location and SIDS, demonstrating that these findings are far more complex than they are frequently portrayed. This presentation also will describe recent data from the U.S. sample of the Survey of Mothers’ Sleep and Fatigue, a survey of 4,789 mothers of infants 0–12 months of age. The findings indicate that almost 60% of mothers bedshare on a regular basis, and that this occurs throughout the first year. These findings also indicate that 25% of mothers are falling asleep with their infants in dangerous sleep locations, such as chairs, sofas, or recliners. Recommendations for promoting safe infant sleep will be made. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, Ph.D., IBCLC
102: What Does Healthy Eating Mean to You?
Our understanding of what is healthy is influenced by culture, family, and media. We'll discuss the challenges to and benefits of making healthy, balanced choices for ourselves and our families. Katja Leccisi
103: I’ve Told You a Thousand Times: Conflict Resolution with Kids
We’ll talk about how to set clear expectations with your children and encourage cooperation within your family. Kathy Drury
104: La Leche League Leadership: Just Do It!
This session is for La Leche League Leaders, Leader Applicants, and anyone potentially interested in LLL leadership. Come meet with the Coordinator of Leader Accreditation for LLL of ME/NH. An overview of the accreditation process will be discussed, and there will be plenty of time for questions and answers. Melanie Kollman
Session 2: 10:30-11:45 a.m.
201: Supporting Natural Childbirth in a Hospital Setting (1.25 CERPs)
Why do some women choose to labor naturally, and what does the term natural childbirth even mean? We will review ways to support the natural process of birth. We’ll talk about how the mother-baby labor hormones and experience are changed by interventions, and what the implications are for their well-being during labor, birth, and breastfeeding. We will discuss how we can help mitigate the impact of interventions to improve breastfeeding. Julie Brill CCCE, CLD, IBCLC
202: Pumping: What’s That For?
A discussion of the many reasons pumping may be part of how a baby gets fed, whether pumping exclusively, to donate or increase supply, while at work, or for the occasional night out. We will explore support, talk about which rules to break and which to follow, and review tips for trouble-shooting common pumping problems. Sarah Russell
203: Tiny Baby, Huge Changes
The first year can feel like everything is new and different for mother, partner, siblings, and the friends and family around them. And at the center of change, the whole world is new for the baby! Come to discuss and share the challenges, the joys, and the surprises that affect every relationship around a brand new person. This session welcomes mothers, partners, family members, and siblings. Julie Allen, Jordan Osgood, and Jen Rosenthal
204: Even Shakespeare Used They: Using Inclusive Language When Providing Support
She, he, they, xe, xir. What are all these pronouns, and how do I use them? As more people identify as transgender or nonbinary, and as La Leche League International and other organizations become more inclusive, it is important that those of us providing support are taking the steps necessary to include all people and their experiences with breast/chestfeeding. In this session we’ll talk about pronouns, terms, and how to make those who are transgender and nonbinary feel more included in our support and meetings. Though this session is mainly geared toward those who provide breast/chestfeeding support, anyone with an open mind is welcome. PLEASE NOTE: This is a safe space for trans and nonbinary parents/support people. Disrespectful language will not be tolerated. Sarah Kneeland-Campbell
Session 3: 1:30-2:45 p.m.
301: Does Breastfeeding Protect Maternal Mental Health? The Role of Oxytocin and Stress (1 CERP)
Depression research contains many conclusions that appear to contradict each other. For example, breastfeeding lowers the risk of depression, but depression increases the risk that breastfeeding will fail. Moreover, breastfeeding problems increase women's risk of depression. These findings are not as contradictory as they may seem. By understanding the underlying physiological mechanism, we can understand these seemingly paradoxical findings. This presentation will describe the link between the stress and oxytocin systems, and how they relate to both maternal mental health and breastfeeding. When the stress system is upregulated, depression and breastfeeding difficulties follow. Conversely, when oxytocin is upregulated, maternal mental health and breastfeeding rates improve. This talk also includes the role of birth interventions and mother-infant sleep, as well as practical strategies that increase oxytocin. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett, Ph. D., IBCLC
302: Let's Talk Toddlers!!
Let's talk about toddler nursing, nighttime parenting, setting limits, and more! Bring your questions and issues. Pam Freedman
303: Growing Your LLL Group
Part of what makes us great La Leche League Leaders is our passion. This session is focused on acquiring more attendees who are passionate about your LLL Group. We’ll also discuss how to grow your Group’s treasury, the planning and execution of a successful Live, Love, Latch Event, and how utilizing your own strengths makes for a stronger Group, which in turn supports your community. Estee Cuddihy and Kristen Walsh
304: Fostering a Healthy Fatherhood
A facilitated session for partners to explore what it means to be a supportive father figure and spouse/partner in today’s culture. Participants will discuss current paradigms, explore personal goals, and discover they are not alone and can take steps to foster a supportive community. John Eddyblouin, Cory Osgood, and Glen Shivel
Session 4: 3:00-4:15 p.m.
401: Will You Still Be Supporting Breastfeeding Dyads Next Year?: Preventing Burnout and the Practice of Self-Care (1.25 CERPs)
We come to this work because we want to serve families, and we often throw ourselves into it body, mind, and soul. We will discuss simple techniques for turning off stress, being in the moment, and self-care that can help make supporting others more sustainable. We nurture other families and our own; let’s focus now on nurturing ourselves. Julie Brill CCCE, CLD, IBCLC
402: What Every Woman Should Know about Her Pelvic Health
This session will explore what role pregnancy and birth play in your long-term pelvic health, why pelvic floor and core issues such as incontinence, prolapse, pelvic pain, and diastasis recti are common outcomes, and what options are available for their treatment. Ryan Bailey, PT, DPT, WCS
403: More Food, Less Effort
We feed our children every day, and we want to do it well! This session will offer a common-sense approach to childhood nutrition at home, in day-care, and at school. Katja Leccisi, MS, RDN
404: Living with Your Spirited Child
When you discover that your child is more intense, more reactive, and just MORE, you may feel as though the tools you have learned aren't enough. This session will explore what works and what might not work while raising a spirited child. We'll discuss what research shows us about neurobiology, behavior, and parenting the spirited child. Jenn Hewson
About Our Guest Speakers
Pam Freedman, Alliance Leader Department Administrator (LDA), first became involved with La Leche League while living in Ohio and pregnant with her second child. After moving to North Carolina in 1983 she became an LLL Leader. Since that time she has held many Area Council positions, including Area Conference Coordinator and Area Coordinator of Leaders in NC. She served the (then called) Eastern US Division as a Regional Administrator for the Appalachian Region and for the Great Lakes Region before she became LDA. Pam works with three LLL Groups in Chapel Hill as well as a weekly Breastfeeding Cafe. She works with local movers and shakers in town to keep La Leche League in the community spotlight there. Pam and her husband, Steve, have three adult children and one grandchild, a happy breastfeeding toddler. When she is not doing LLL work, Pam can usually be found reading, working out, vegetarian cooking, and talking with friends and co-Leaders.
